CALIFORNIA FIRES: At Least 31 Dead in Devastating Blazes

Firefighters in Northern and Southern California continued to do battle with fires on Sunday after the winds that died down on Saturday returned on Sunday.

Aside from ravaging communities, the fires have led to the deaths of at least 29 people in the Northern California town of Paradise and two in Malibu in Southern California.

About 250,000 people have been evacuated from their homes due to the fires.

California Governor Jerry Brown requested that Donald Trump call the fires a major disaster to help with the recovery efforts and emergency response. Trump had previously fired off a tweet criticizing the state's handling of forests, threatening to withhold federal funds. His tweet was widely criticized for its inaccuracies and lack of sympathy and compassion for those affected by the fires.

The two main fires are the Camp Fire in Northern California, which tore through the town of Paradise, and the Woolsey fire, which has burned more than 83,000 acres, including parts of Malibu, noted for its celebrity residents.

Thousands Oaks, the same community shook by last week's shooting spree that killed 12, has also been threatened by the fire, with thousands of residents asked to evacuate. (BBC)

  • Trump's tweet was especially ill-timed and unsympathetic to those who lost their loved ones, homes or were forced to evacuate.
  • Some have pointed out that much of the area ravaged by the fires is actually federal land.
  • Thoughts and payers to those affected by the fires.
