COMMON: Helping Starbucks With Bias Training

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • That this isn’t mandatory tells you all you need to know.
  • Why is Common involved with this? That just seems random.
  • The idea of changing implicit bias in a few hours is laughable. Starbucks needs to commit to this effort in the long run -- it's a marathon, not a sprint.
  • They needed to do some kind of damage control to repair their image and win back public trust.
  • When you have as many employees as Starbucks does, it's impossible to get everyone to align with your core values.

The racial-bias workshop will include video messages recorded by Com and company executives. Sessions are not mandatory, but employees will be compensated should they choose to attend.

The training initiative is the result of the manager of a Philadelphia Starbucks calling police over two African-American men who walked into the store without buying anything back in March. (USA Today)
